Meet Me

This is me with flowers

Hi, my name is Melanie! I live in Munich, and my passions are sewing, travelling and books. I found my way into sewing through books, actually! My family has a publishing house, and part of their program is dedicated to sewing (the German speakers amongst you might know the company: Stiebner Verlag). So my parents always had a ton of sewing books laying around at their house. Whenever I was there to visit, I would page through them, with only mediocre interest… until one day, in the summer of 2015, I though to myself: “This sewing thing can’t be that hard – and it actually looks like fun. I’ll try it.” So I booked myself into a 3-hour beginners lesson, and after 5 minutes I was addicted. You all know the rest – once you are infected with the “sewing bug”, you’re never the same again!

So for the last one and a half years, I have been sewing, sewing, sewing… I did all kinds of courses, watched every video and read every book and blog that I could lay hands on. All in order to learn more and more about my favorite hobby. During this time, I have become a big fan of the online sewing community – I never would have learned so quickly without all those great bloggers and vloggers out there! Plus, in all those forums and facebook groups, there is always someone to answer your question or help you with a fiddly bit. And don’t even get me started on Instagram :-)!

Slowly, as I was getting better, I began thinking about starting my own blog – the idea for The Flying Needle was born. The name was a spontaneous find – my husband and I were thinking about ways to combine my two favorite activities, sewing and travelling, in one word. But, fear not, this will not be a travel blog – I want to show you my little part of the sewing world: sewing projects and makes, beautiful fabrics I found and books, blogs and events that inspire me. In July 2018 I was able to turn my hobby into my job: I joined our Family business and now take care of the sales and marketing for our wonderful books!

So: Grab a cup of coffee and have a look around! If you like what you see, feel free to leave a comment or get in touch with a message! Have fun reading, Melanie
